About Us - Our Board & Staff
Our Board of Directors (2011-2012)

George Edwards, Chair
As a father of two special needs children, I know the importance of having a good hospital close by. When a loved one is sick and you need help...you need it now! No one wants to wait or travel to a larger center for the proper medical care. Here in South Muskoka, we are fortunate to have a hospital that is well equipped and well staffed with a team of nurses and physicians that are both professional and dedicated to providing world-class health care. Let's keep it that way!
Quite simply... Serving as a director and assisting with the much-needed fund raising efforts is a personal decision for me to give back. I want to ensure that our hospital continues to thrive and serve our future generations.

The Foundation has developed an operating style and organizational structure which clearly represents a committed and professional approach to the task of health care development. I am pleased to be part of this board, knowing that our appeal for assistance from the Muskoka community will continue to be met with full support.

When my husband and I moved from Toronto, we had the flexibility to choose among many communities. One of the deciding factors for living in Bracebridge was South Muskoka Hospital. On those occasions when we have required medical assistance, the level of knowledge, skill and care has been exemplary.
As a member of the Foundation, I believe that, in this time of government restraints, our community must step forward to increase support for the Hospital. It is vital that the level of care and commitment at South Muskoka Hospital continues to grow as our community expands and our society ages.

A hospital is the heart and soul of any community. A strong and vital community needs a strong and vital hospital. Through a recent personal experience I have had a first hand view of how we, in south Muskoka, are privileged to have in South Muskoka Memorial Hospital a staff and facility that meets that need. The nurses, doctors, support staff and administration are among the most dedicated and caring found anywhere. By joining the Foundation I will hopefully be able to help make available the facilities that will let them continue to give their patients the superior care and comfort that they now provide so well.

Having lived in Muskoka all my life, I have seen many changes in our hospital system. Family members and friends have received excellent treatment by the professional and caring staff. It is an honour to be invited to serve on the Hospital Foundation Board of Directors and I look forward to assisting with the fundraising commitments that are required to maintain the high standards that have been set by past board members.

Muskoka Algonquin Healthcare is fortunate to have a partner such as the South Muskoka Hospital Foundation who is essential to our ability to deliver safe, high-quality healthcare in Muskoka. I am grateful for the opportunity to be a member of the Foundation Board working along side dedicated volunteers who tirelessly commit countless hours raising funds to improve patient care and ensure that MAHC grows with the communities we serve – whether through capital projects, medical equipment or technology.
In today’s evolving and ever-changing healthcare environment, the interconnection and lines of communication between the hospital and Foundation are crucial to our success. Being a member of the Boards of both of our Hospital Foundations gives me an opportunity to keep the Boards updated on developments within the hospital and to respond to any issues or concerns immediately as they arise. We work together to identify new and effective ways to continue to provide safe and high-quality healthcare to the people of Muskoka.

South Muskoka Memorial Hospital has played a central role in my life and my community literally from day-one. I was born at SMMH. It's difficult to find a deeper connection than that, I suppose. Through the years, even as I have lived away from Bracebridge, I have stayed connected - the list of family visits from births to tests, to emergencies is long. During my time working in provincial politics I stayed close to the hospital and advocated for improvements and funding. When my father suffered a stroke, it was to SMMH I raced in the middle of the night from Toronto. And it was the quick and decisive action in the Emergency Room along with the many weeks of care and therapy after brain surgery at Toronto Western that saved my Mother's life. I have received so much from this important place. I am excited at the opportunity to get involved and give back.

I am very pleased and quite honoured to have been asked to serve on the Hospital Foundation Board of Directors. As a citizen of Bracebridge since 1974, and as a person with special needs because I live with MS, I am grateful for the opportunity to give back to my hospital and community.
We are so fortunate to have such a wonderful facility, tremendous professionals and staff, and I look forward to being a part of the challenges ahead to keep our hospital vibrant and equipped with state of the art medical equipment.

I am excited about making a contribution to my community hospital. My family have made frequent use of the hospital, thankfully, mostly for minor complaints. Our very first visit was with my son Devin. He was in kindergarten at the time and the school had a welcome to school event at the rink – Devin was on the ice for about 5 minutes before he fell and split his chin! I come from Zimbabwe and this common Canadian right of passage was not something I had encountered before in a country where the temperatures hardly ever drop to zero. The nurses and doctors were calming and efficient in dealing with the problem and this of course helped me – the distraught Mom - to calm down.
On a more serious note, I have been involved in many not for profits in a financial capacity in the past. Some of them in good financial shape and some that needed work. The complex nature of the not for profit financial world requires very careful steering by an able and dedicated Board which we are very lucky to have here. I believe that it is important to build a fiscally healthy Foundation that will serve the community for generations to come.

I was raised in a medical environment. My late father was a surgeon. My older brother is an obstetrician/gynecologist. I learned at an early age the importance of having a well-staffed, equipped, and well run, accessible hospital. South Muskoka Memorial Hospital has a history of providing excellent health care to the residents of Bracebridge and the surrounding area. Now that I have retired to Muskoka, I very much look forward to providing my expertise and services to support our hospital.

As a physician, my work is grounded in hospital care for my patients and to provide the best service possible to them, I knew I needed to work toward maintaining a modern facility that is up-to-date. This obviously required money to purchase the latest equipment available for the South Muskoka Memorial Hospital. I was therefore inclined to be proactive and advocate for the hospital and physicians as a group who were interested in seeing our hospital succeed. The nursing care has always been excellent but we were falling behind the standard of care because of outdated equipment. Fortunately, the foundation board felt the same way and have now carried out a very successful campaign that has allowed our hospital to surpass the standard of care for Muskoka patients. I am very proud of the effort to date. We have excellent board members who are forward thinking and progressive. I consider myself fortunate to have the opportunity to work with such outstanding hospital supporters. Nothing succeeds like success. |
